MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - At the Meridian Township Board meeting, an update and voting motion on the Grettenberger Drain and Meijer Drain occurred. These drains are located at the intersection of Grand River Ave and Okemos Rd.
The goal is to reduce the amount of flooding that happens in this area during certain times of the year, which leads to closing those roads based on severity and safety of the residents of Meridian.
The plan for the drains, still to be finalized, includes the Ingham County Drain Commission, Michigan Department of Transportation, and the Ingham County Roads Department because each group has infrastructures in the area that will be affected by the improvements.
Once the plan is formalized it will be combined with an already developed plan created by MDOT. The secondary component to the plan, for it to work, is the use of Township property for flood plain mitigation.
In early October of this year, the Ingham County Drain Commission presented findings of the drainage study on why a petition is necessary for a final plan.
There was a motion at the Township Board meeting that would allow for the Township to move forward in being involved in the plan and work with MDOT, ICDC, and ICRD in improving the Grettenberger and Meijer Drains.
The Motion passed 7-0 at the November 5th meeting for the Township Board.
