Zoning Board Denied One of Two Variance Requests for Resident

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - At the June 12th Meridian Township Zoning Board of Appeals meeting, a resident had two variance requests before the Board. The first was to construct an accessory building that would project into the front yard. The second was to exceed the maximum front yard driveway coverage at 5411 Marsh Road.

The Board denied the resident's first variance request which states, no accessory building shall project into any front yard.

The second variance states that parking on non paved open space is prohibited. And parking in driveways is prohibited, except in one-family residential districts.

Also, there shall be no motor vehicle parking space in the front yard, except on a paved or gravel driveway that occupies no more than thirty five percent of the total area of the front yard.

"I have an easier time reaching the drive way variance if that was the case. I think we could meet the practical difficulty there if this was an existing or this was already permitted and this was going forward either attached or smaller to meet with another variance. It's the five foot variance is what i'm having trouble to meet a couple of the criteria there," said Alexia Mansour, Vice Chair of the Zoning Board of Appeals.

To allow for further discussion, the Board postponed the second variance request approval or denial to their next meeting.
