MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The National Weather Service of Grand Rapids is forecasting severe snowstorms affecting the southern lower peninsula starting early Wednesday (2/2/22) morning at around 2:00 am, lasting until 11:00 pm on Thursday.

With an expected total snow accumulation of approximately 6 to 10 inches in Ingham county. The snow, combined with gusting winds, is expected to cause low visibility and hazardous driving conditions.

Col. Joe Gasper, State Director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, said, “Travel may be extremely dangerous over the next few days, so we are asking people to stay home, if possible.”

Travelers on the road are advised to keep an extra flashlight, a set of jumper cables, warm clothes and blankets, food, and water in case of an emergency with the vehicle. In addition, The Michigan State Police asks drivers to tune in to local news or visit michigan.gov/road conditions instead of calling the local MSP post or 911 for travel conditions.

Vehicle owners are encouraged to avoid parking spots near or under trees with ice and snow weighing down the branches.

Governor Whitmer stated that, “Staying home will keep you safe and will help emergency crews focus on improving road conditions and assisting those who need it. Michiganders are no stranger to big storms, and I know we can get through the next few days together.”

With Temperatures dropping between 20 - 30 degrees Fahrenheit within the next few days, residents are advised to watch for signs of hypothermia, including uncontrollable shivering, memory loss, drowsiness. And keep an eye for frostbite injuries when shoveling snow, causing numbness, tingling, and skin discoloration.
