Harris Nature Center's Harvest Moon: Stories Around the Campfire

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - On October seventh at seven o' clock pm, Harris Nature Center in Okemos hosted Harvest Moon: Stories Around the Campfire.

The assistant naturalist started off the event by going over the phases of the moon with participants while the fire crackled.

Allison Goodman, the assistant naturalist at Harris Nature Center, said during her presentation on the moon phases, " When the moon is waxing, you're always gonna see the light on the right side, when it's waning after it's reached full we're gonna see the light on the left side of the moon."

After the presentation participants cooked gooey s'mores and told stories around the campfire.

"The harvest moon is the full moon that's closest to the autumnal equinox which this year was September 22nd." Allison Goodman said. " We have been doing this campfire since I have been working here, for about eight years."

When asked about how often the event takes place Allison Goodman said, "We do our harvest moon campfire once a year and it's always around the closest full moon to the autumnal equinox."

After the s'mores and story telling session ended the event concluded with the fire being put out and participants going on a short trail walk with a naturalist.
