Community Plant Removal at Sander Farm Land Preserve

Community Plant Removal at Sander Farm Land Preserve

OKEMOS - The Meridian Conservation Corps (MCC) held an event to remove invasive plants at Dobie Road on Saturday, October 22.

The event went from 9:30 am - 12:00 pm at the Sander Farm Preserved Natural Area, with the purpose of restoring habitats across parks and preservations with activities like the removal of invasive plants and sowing native seeds to improve the community. Invasive plants are harmful to the economy, environment, and human health. Some invasive plants are harmful on storm water infrastructures, as well as housing development and even the health of the trees.

“The reason that we’re able to do these amazing events is because we have such an incredible community that’s very much invested in natural areas. That’s why we do Stewardship Saturdays, so people can learn more about what to look out for and it’s an effort from the Township and the community,” said Emma Campbell, the Land Stewardship Coordinator.

Campbell says her favorite part of running the MCC is getting to know the people in the community and loves when a big group of 25-30 people walk up, she can know them by name and learn about them.

She added, “All of them have incredible skills that they’re bringing, and everyone has a different background and a way to contribute. Getting to know this community through this program is incredible and you’re getting the best of the best with the people who show up and want to help. I feel much closer to this community since I started this program.”

The next Stewardship Saturday event will be held on November 5. For more information, please contact Land Stewardship Coordinator Emma Campbell at ecampbell@meridian.mi.us or call at 517.853.4614.
