OKEMOS, MI - On Wednesday, May 24th the Okemos Girls Lacrosse team hosted the East Lansing Trojans on their home field in the opening match up of the MHSAA Regional Playoffs.
The Okemos Chieftains looked to continue their historic regular season into the playoffs, looking to win their 6th straight Regional Title. Not only did the East Lansing Trojans had other plans for the Chieftains tonight, but so did mother nature as the game was played through the rain and making playing conditions difficult for both teams.
It was a juggernaut fight between the two teams as they both were relentless in going after the ball. Makayla Merony of the Trojans scored the first goal of the game 2 minutes into regulation. It wasn't long however until the Chieftains answered back with a goal of their own, scored by Alyssa Karber, making the score 1-1. Not too long after the Chieftans scored again, this time by Melaina Grewal, making the score 2-1. From that point the Chieftains continued to build on that lead but the Trojans weren't going down that easily as they kept it close in the first 10 minutes of the first half. The Chieftains then blew up on offense and stellar goaltending as they expanded their lead to 13-3 at the half.
At the start of the 2nd half the Chieftains continued their dominance on field as they scored 2 quick goals in the opening minutes making the score 15-3. The Chieftains discipline and tenacity lead them to a 21-7 victory over the Trojans and a trip to the Regional Semifinals and face Haslett/Williamston. The Chieftains are looking for their 3rd victory over Haslett/Williamston this season to reach the Regional Championship.
After the game Coach Schwind of Okemos looks to "Defensively improve on ball watching, we're getting caught off gaurd, but when you're up by that much its hard to keep the focus. We're gonna work on playing the full 50 minutes of the game and every aspect such as ground balls and better defense. We must of had 6 hit pipes. We are also looking to finish our shots on goal offensively".
