INGHAM COUNTY - With the winter season upon us, it is important to keep your pets safe as the temperatures continue to drop.

"One of the things that people need to consider is even though dogs and cats do have fur, they are still susceptible to extreme, cold temperatures," said Ken Plaga, Assistant Chief of Police for Meridian Township.

These cold temperatures can be more harmful than you might think.

Pets can get frostbite or hypothermia if not properly taken care of.

If you do have your pets outdoors, be sure to frequently check on their food and water. The water often freezes and they will need extra food to withstand the cold.

"People say 'oh they'll eat the snow. No they won't.They won't be able to get enough hydration and eating snow will lower their body temperature. So you need to check your animal's water multiple times a day, or better yet, get them a heated water bowl," said Director of the Ingham County Animal Control, John Dinon.

In addition to providing sufficient amounts of food and water, having a shelter that protects your pets is crucial.

If you are in need of a dog house or hay to insulate it, the Ingham County Animal Control are giving them away.
