MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - It's officially spring and while Meridian Township has had snow on the ground recently, it is not stopping the Haslett Beautification Association (HBA) from preparing for its spring 2016 projects.

The HBA maintains the flower beds around the downtown area of Haslett, and at the United States Post Office, as well as an urn under the Haslett clock tower.

"Our goal is to make Haslett such a nice place to live and try to get more businesses here," said Shari Middlewood, Vice President of the HBA.

Middlewood joined the association two years after it was created and said the association recently celebrated its 10 year anniversary.

Projects coming up for the spring season begin April 30, with a spring clean up. It's a group event where volunteers clean out branches and leaves, as well as cut back any growth that needs done. With a date yet to be determined, there will also be a planting day in May.

The HBA is also planning to plant downtown Haslett "in pink" by joining the Meridian Garden Club to spread awareness for breast cancer.

Members of the HBA are local residents from Haslett and surrounding areas and going into its second decade, Teri Banas, President of the HBA, is eager to have more people join the group

"We would really like to boost our volunteer force," Banas said. "What ask people to do is kind of take part in adopting a flowerbed with a friend or a couple of friends and take turns maintaining it."

The HBA is hosting a meeting at the Haslett Public Library on Thursday, April 7, at 6:30 p.m. for those who may be interested in joining.

"You're welcomed to drop in, you don't have to stay for the whole meeting," Banas said. "We have some master gardeners but, come with any or no experience and we're happy to help work with you."
