OKEMOS - Dusted with sugar, filled with custard.
People all over the country celebrated the Christian holiday, Mardi Gra, on Tuesday, February 9, by indulging in something sweet--the Polish pastry, paczki.
Better known as Fat Tuesday, customers were in and out at a local Quality Dairy store stocking up on the many different flavors of paczki the store had to offer.
Store manager, Tacuma Clemons said his location sells an average of 5,000 paczki on Fat Tuesday alone. He said part of the reason he thinks people are drawn to the custard or jelly-filled pastry is because the Lent season begins the day after and because of New Year's resolutions.
"What people often tell themselves is Lent is coming up and so they cut out all the sweets," Clemons said. "Another thing I think is New Year's resolutions come to mind and people question whether they should have one or not."
For paczki buyer Emily Kramek, she said the tradition of buying the Polish treat each year is more than just satisfying her sweet tooth, but something she holds dear to her heart.
"My grandma is Polish, and she died, and she was 92," Kramek said. "So I figured, 'thanks to grandma I'm Polish', why not celebrate?"
Whatever the reason people buy paczki, it's a treat sure to satisfy any sweet tooth.
