MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Comcast is currently in the process of acquisition with Time Warner Cable.
In order for Comcast to merge they must first sell off some of their shares. They are selling the shares to a third company they created in exchange for customers in larger areas, like New York, that will bring in more revenue.
Comcast is choosing to sell the shares that generate the least revenue which would include communities like Meridian Township.
The systems of Comcast customers in these areas will be transferred to the newly formed company GreatLand Connections.
The Cable Commission still awaits vital information before they will act on the proposals and say that customers have as well voiced their concerns.
“The biggest concerns that they have are rates and the equipment," said Deborah Guthrie of the Communications department. "And you know for Meridian Township we also have those concerns but on top of which because we receive revenue from the cable company we have concerns about that as well. We want to make sure that our same service and same agreement that we had with Comcast is in place with the new company.”
The municipality will make a decision to approve, approve with condition or deny when more information is received.
The Cable Commission said that the delayed information suggests that the deal continues to be in flux, and raises many concerns regarding impacts on local communities.
Due to this delay, Meridian Township municipality has an extension on their deadline until January 15th but are hoping to get this even further extended to march to properly accommodate the holiday and new persons in office.
In the mean time, the cable commission is working with lawyers and the cable commissions in other areas to ensure the smoothest transition possible. Residents with concerns, are more than welcome to contact Deborah Guthrie for more information.
