UPDATE: MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The future of the central fire station is still unclear and with the issue on the November ballot, key players met to discuss future plans and possibilities to fund the project.

To make it a reality residents would have to vote and approve a millage that would cost the average $100,000 home owner $20 more a year in taxes. That millage would last for five years. Proponents argue the new fire station would keep response times at the same standard they currently are after the current Central Fire Station inevitably closes.

Ken Phinney, Meridian Township Fire Department Paramedic, said, “I just think it’s important the citizens understand that there is a great need for that station to be there. This was decided several years ago that we needed three stations here in Meridian Township and that’s the way our fire department is set up is to run out of three stations.”

The proposed new fire station would sit on the corner of Central park and Okemos Road, a plot of land that is already owned by the township.
