Language Approved For Ballot Ordinance on Recreational Marijuana

Language Approved For Ballot Ordinance on Recreational Marijuana

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Meridian Township Board approved the ballot language for the November 2, 2021 election at the Township Board meeting on August 3. The ballot question concerns the use of recreational marijuana and establishments in the Township.

The reason for this question on the ballot was brought to the board's attention through 175 petition sheets sent to the Clerk's Office. The office verified 1,297 valid signatures out of 1,460 on the petition.

The petition submitted asked for an ordinance on the ballot to completely prohibit adult-use or recreational marijuana establishments within the boundaries of the Township.

During the meeting, the Township attorney Matt Kuschel explained to the Board about the proposal and what would happen if the Board voted against it.

"The petition has been presented," Kuschel said. "Your job then is to draft this ballot language that is going to be presented."

The ballot wording is due to the County Clerk's Office by the latest of August 10 at 4:00 pm.
