LANSING - The Michigan Senate and House of Representatives declare June Elder Abuse Awareness Month.
Representative Brenda Carter introduced the action to both branches of government.
“I want to thank both chambers for recognizing the importance of elder abuse awareness, an often unnoticed and unreported issue,” said Michigan Attorney General, Dana Nessel. “In order to properly protect our aging population, we must be able to recognize the signs of abuse.
Some signs of elder abuse include unexplained injuries, hesitance to speak in the presence of their caregiver and unexpected changes in wills or property deeds.
“Our Elder Abuse Task Force has a number of resources available online to help identify physical and emotional abuse, neglect and financial exploitation of seniors,” said Nessel.
The task force was launched in 2019 and includes more than 55 various organizations including private, public and nonprofit sections.
Online resources regarding elder abuse can be found at Michigan.gov under the Attorney General tab. Reports of elder abuse can be made by calling 855.444.3911.
