WASHINGTON D.C - Legislative leaders were confirming the electoral college votes for President-Elect Joe Biden, when a crowd of supporters who follow Donald Trump stormed Capitol Hill in Washington D.C, which Trump himself has continued to claim the election was stolen from him.
There was an armed standoff and lawmakers as barricades were charged, scaffolding scaled and, eventually, the Capitol had been breached and other government buildings were evacuated. A woman was shot and police later confirmed she had died. Arrests have been made and police that were guarding the Capitol released smoke bombs into the surging crowd, as well as released tear gas in the rotunda.
The Senate had to recess the Electoral College debate as the Capitol went into lockdown to protect those inside. Haley Stevens, Representative for Michigan’s 11th Congressional District, announced that she had locked herself in her office due to the danger of the security being breached.
Muriel Bowser, the Mayor of Washington D.C, has ordered a 6pm curfew in turn of this event, while Trump acknowledged the situation by only saying, "Please support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement. They are truly on the side of our Country. Stay peaceful!" After criticizing Vice President Mike Pence, he later tweeted, "I am asking for everyone at the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful. No violence! Remember, WE are the Party of Law & Order – respect the Law and our great men and women in Blue. Thank you!"
Congress is expected to reconvene tonight after the Capitol has been cleared.
