LANSING - Do you have a bunch of library books lying around at home? Soon you’ll be able to return them as the Capital Area District Library has announced its reopening plan.
Drop boxes for library items will reopen for returns on June 15, this includes hotspots and passes but a drop-off time is required for all other items. Items that are returned will be quarantined for 72 hours before staff checks them in. Due dates on all items have been extended to June 29. On June 22 the library will reopen in three stages. Stage one will be contactless service where you will be able to reserve items by placing a hold or calling your branch and scheduling a time to pick them up either curbside or at the door. Stage two will be limited building access for item pickup, account services and browsing for a limited number of a people at a time. Full access will occur at stage three but social distancing guidelines may still be in place.
No date has been set for moving between stages. CADL Executive Director Scott Duimstra says that will depend on space setup.
“What we have to do while we are doing that service (Stage One) is actually set up our inside spaces for that limited access model which is the level two service that we’re safely able to do that,” Duimstra said. “What that is, is showing that there’s enough space between stacks for people to go through, having one-way traffic through those stacks, setting up public computers so they are six feet apart and probably closing off some of the children’s area and seating areas.”
Duimstra went on to say that moving to full access will depend on where Michigan is in its reopening.
In addition to quarantining returned items for 72 hours, the library has a COVID-19 preparedness and response plan which includes staff training, increased cleaning protocols and personal protection equipment for staff. The library is also asking that patrons who are picking up items in stage one or coming into the building in stage two to wear a mask.
