UPDATE: EAST LANSING - Local college students are hoping a new proposal will leave them with a little extra money in their pockets.

In 2011 the average student graduating from a 4-year college left school with roughly $23,000 of student debt. This is according to House Resolution 365 introduced
by Democratic Representative Hansen Clarke. The motion says Congress should cut the country's true debt burden by forgiving student loans.

Michigan State University student Chelsea Oneill says this would be great. "I have too many student loans so it would be wonderful if I didn't have to worry about paying them back."

Many local students agree. No student loans would mean more money to put back into the economy. Oneill imagines what she could do with the extra money.

Though this is actually a federal resolution introduced to the House of Representatives, this issue will have a huge impact on many citizens and all 110 Michigan representatives.

Democratic State Representative Joan Bauer of Lansing says this resolution is about more than just forgiving student loans, but forging all major personal debt. "Debt is at an all time high, personal debt, between home mortgages, college loans, and credit card debt."

On the other hand, Representative Bauer admits, forgiving all personal debt isn't as easy as it sounds. "I just don't know exactly how we would be able to pull it off, but the issues are real, and I think that we have to take a look at these issues."

There is no specific bill language at this time. This resolution is only to bring awareness to the issue and start a conversation.
