OKEMOS - On Saturday afternoon at Okemos High School was the site for the MHSAA Baseball District Playoffs. Competition started at 10 am as the the winning teams from the first two games would later face off against each other for the District Championship that afternoon which featured the Grand Ledge Comets, who have been red hot since the start of the season and are ranked 6th in the state, and the East Lansing Trojans.

It was a competetive game from start to finish and was an emotional one especially for the Comets as they were playing for late their teammate Jonathan Tuthill, who passed away in a car accident this past August. The Grand Ledge team wore caps with the initials "JMT" and have dedicated the season to him, especially Wyatt Rush, who wore Jonathan's #24 jersey, and Xavier Farr as they were close friends of Jonathan.

The game started off with some early runs as both teams tallied a total of 3 runs in the first 2 innings lead by Xavier Farr and the Comets as Farr scored the first run of the game and went 2/3 at the plate (2 Doubles and a pop fly out).

The game was stuck at 2-1, Comets lead, up until the 6th inning where both teams score 1 run a piece making it 3-2. It was a very defensive battle as both teams did whatever it took to stop the other teams from scoring anymore runs within the game.

East Lansing's Austin Adams pitched the entire game, only letting up 4 runs. This is a very difficult feat to accomplish at the high school level as it takes a huge toll on the players body but the Trojans had confidence in him.

The game came down to the wire that afternoon. Heading into the 7th inning the Comets were up 3-2 and extending that lead making it 4-2 before they went into the bottom of the 7th. During that inning they had #24, Wyatt Rush take over on the mount to finish the game up. It seemed as if the Comets had it in the books but the Trojans weren't going down without a fight and they did just that.

With 2 outs and a man on first and second, Connor Charamella was up to bat and was able to get an RBI single out of it bringing the Trojans within one. With a man on first and third the Comets just needed one more out to walk away with the District title. As Rush pitched the ball, the Trojans batter hit the ball to short stop for an easy throw out at first and to walk off the field as District Champions.

The Comets continue their journey in the playoffs as they play on June 10 against Portage Central at 10 am.
