National Bike Month Promotes Safety

LANSING - With the weather warming up, May is National Bike Month where bike safety is promoted.

According to MDOT, there were close to 2,000 reported crashed involving bicyclists where about 1,500 injuries resulted.

National Bike Month also encourages citizens to utilize their bike more. Bike to Work Week occurred from May 15-19 and Bike to Work Day on May 19th.

Velocipede Bikes Owner Mark Sanderson wants people to enjoying the benefits of biking.

"We try to encourage people to bike because it is healthier and way better for the environment," Sanderson said. "It is easier to park and it eases up on the traffic."

MDOT reminds motorists that bicyclists are allowed to ride on roadways and reminds cyclist that they are required to obey all traffic laws.
