Another Developer Drops Out of Downtown Okemos

Another Developer Drops Out of Downtown Okemos

OKEMOS - Nearly two years ago Kris Elliot of Evergreen Companies placed a bid for the redevelopment of the former Central Fire Station and “The Marc” property located on Okemos Road in Downtown Okemos.

The old Central Fire Station was torn down in 2012. Today that property is for sale again.

"The original proposed draft plan was a mixed-use development. The Marc building was going to be the restaurant component, and the fire station would have been an 18-unit apartment building. We never received a document to approve the plans," said Ben Motil, Meridian Township Economic Developer/Associate Planner.

This isn’t the only hit that Downtown Okemos has suffered in the past year. In 2012 Douglas J bought the neighboring buildings (former locations of the Triple Goddess Bookstore, Travelers Club International Restaurant & Tuba Museum and White Brothers Music) on Okemos Road, for a future redevelopment. In September of 2016, Douglas J also put their properties up for sale and decided not to move forward with their proposed $10 million project.

According to Meridian Township documents in April 2015 Kris Elliott of Evergreen Companies originally placed a bid of $560,000 for property, he ended up purchasing it for $550,000. He bought both the former Central Fire Station and The Marc when he purchased the property.

"Were always open to discussion with new developers on how to further develop Downtown Okemos, we're open to new ideas," said Mobil.

Kris Elliot of Evergreen Companies was unavailable for comment.
