of Carbon Monoxide As Temperatures Cool
Down

LANSING - According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Service, more than 500 Americans die from carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is produced by all fuel-burning devices and faulty water heaters and furnaces are the most common causes of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Susan Manente, a Health Educator for the MDHHS explained, "Since it's the beginning of the cold weather season it's time to get your furnaces checked, your water heaters checked, and other fuel-burning appliances in your home checked by a licensed professional."
Manente went on to say the all carbon monoxide poisoning is preventable and getting your appliances checked is just as important as making sure your carbon monoxide detectors are working properly as well.

The MDHHS also advises residents to remove their cars from the garage before starting them up. Leaving a car running in a closed space can quickly create deadly levels of carbon monoxide.
Carbon monoxide is odorless, colorless, and tasteless. Flu-like symptoms including, headache, vomiting, dizziness, nausea, drowsiness, and confusion are symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.
