Michigan Wine Production

Michigan Wine Production

UPDATE: HASLETT - When Dave and Deborah Burgdorf began producing wine out of their Haslett home, they had no idea that the hobby would turn into a successful business.

"We'd never thought about being a commercial winery," says Deborah, "never even dreamed. It was kind of a thing for us to do and continue to do through retirement.

In addition to producing wines, Burgdorf's is open to visitors for tours and wine tastings.

"They describe our place as being cozy, quaint and homey," Dave says. "People love coming here. They love it being a local winery and having something in their backyard."

The Burgdorfs stress their support for local business and say that they purchase all their grapes from local farms, including Michigan State University's.

"I think being local is important and supporting the economy," Dave says. "The wine industry brings a lot of people to the state."

According to the USDA, the wine industry contributes $300 million annually to Michigan's economy.
