Police Prepare for Prom Season

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Prom season is almost here, and Meridian Township police officers will be on hand at most of the dances to endure students stay safe.

The organization Students Against Destructive Decisions encourages students to avoid drugs and alcohol and abstain from sexual activity. They also say to never drink and drive, and don't get into a car with a drunk driver. SADD encourages students to always wear their seatbelt and let parents or guardians know where they are at all times.

"Obviously we want to discourage young people from risky behavior such as drinking or drugs on those nights, and we'll be present at the proms where we're invited to attend and assist if the schools ask for that," said Lieutenant Greg Frenger of the Meridian Township Police Department.

Frenger also says that the concern isn't only with students, but also with parents. He warns against parents who supply minors with alcohol or even host parties where alcohol use by minors is permitted. Doing so is a crime and can result in prosecution.
