MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - According to the Michigan Township Association's Insight Newsletter, United States Senate leaders do not expect to take any action on a bill that would prohibit changes to the Clean Water Act.

The bill was recently passed through the House of Representatives, who were concerned that the Environmental Protection Agency would be overreaching. The EPA's website says the proposed changes would clarify existing rules as opposed to expanding the Clean Water Act.

Meridian Township Director of Public Works and Engineering Raymond Severy says that he sees the proposed changes to the Clean Water Act having more of an impact on Ingham County, rather than Meridian Township.

"The more waters of the state there are, the more properties, the more drains that are covered by this (Clean Water Act)," Severy said. "So, i think that's the concern by some people, is what the EPA is trying to do is to really expand the scope of the storm drain permit system."

Severy says the reason that there would not be much of an impact on the township is because the township is not responsible for state properties.
