Recognizing Signs of Domestic Violence

LANSING - October marks the month of Domestic Violence Awareness, and community members are preparing for a candle light vigil to remember those who have faced domestic violence.

But how can somebody tell if they or something they know are facing a domestic violence situation?

"The definition for domestic violence that we use is any pattern of behavior that makes you feel unsafe, violates your self esteem, or feeling of well being," End Violent Encounters Community Relations Coordinator Rachel Berzack said.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in every four women will face domestic violence in their lifetime.

The biggest age group at risk are of the ages 20 to 24 dealing with intimate partner violence.

However, men are also apart of the statistic. One in every nine men experience intimate partner or domestic violence.

"We've found that over the years, domestic violence, if you don't kind of nip it in the butt right away it just escalates and the severity of the violence gets worse," Court Services Officer for Meridian Township Kelly Blask said.

If you or a loved one are facing domestic violence you can call the End Violent Encounters Hotline at 517-372-5572. Or for immediate assistance dial 9-1-1.

Or to help raise awareness, the candle light vigil is free and open to the public and will begin at 6:30 p.m. on October 2, at the Michigan Women's Historical Center Hall of Fame.
