The Fight for a Healthier Lifestyle Continues

LANSING - Participants of all ages headed to the Delta Dental complex in Okemos on the morning of Sept. 13 ready for the American Heart Association's annual Greater Lansing Heart Walk.

It was cold and rainy but not even bad weather could stop the people supporting a healthy heart.

"Today we had a good turn out considering the weather," American Heart Association employee Rodney Parkkonen said. "It was a little wet and a little soggy but we've got some really passionate people who came out and did a really great job for us."

Registration for the walk began at 8:30am and the walk started at 9:30am.

Entertainment before the walk included live DJs and appearance from Roary the Detroit Lions mascot and the presentation of The Lifestyle Change Award to Theresa Mudrow.

Mudrow walks not only for her own health but also for her family members.

"I'm participating in the American Heart Walk because of my family's history with heart disease," Mudrow said. "I brought my dad along today he had heart surgery about 20 years ago so I'm here in support of my family and to honor those who have died of heart attacks and also those who are survivors."

Events like the Greater Lansing Heart Walk take a lot of planning and hard work and none of this would be possible without many volunteers and fundraising.

"All the dollars raised here at the heart walk will go to cardiovascular research," American Heart Association Communications Director Stacy Sawyer said. "So everything that researchers are studying right now and what they discover, it will funnel back to Lansing."
