Meridian Township Plans to Improve its Parks

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Meridian Township Park Commission has devised multiple plans to improve the area parks in the event that the park millage is passed on Aug. 5.

The plans include additions and improved maintenance to current parks that will aim to fulfill community wants and needs specifically in 3 township parks, Legg Park, Wonch Park, and Towner Road Park.

"Legg Park which is planned for a development for addition parking, a dog park area fenced and some pavilion improvements," Park Commission Chair Todd Wilson said.

In addition, Legg Park will undergo some environmental changes to hopefully rid the park of some of the invasive species.

Wonch Park has already received a grant to add a loop path around the park, but more changes are anticipated.

"We're looking at moving the brand new pavilion closer to the parking lot, improving the parking lot, improving the restroom facility and it sits on the red cedar river and that such a good resource and were really not interacting much or providing much access to the red cedar river so thats another portion of that park as well," Director of Parks and Recreation Luann Maisner said.

Although there are many plans for the improvement of Township parks, people seem most excited for the development plans right here at Towner Road Park.

The Towner Road Park plans include new baseball diamonds and possible soccer and lacrosse fields.

"Its the northern part of our Township that has been really deficient in our studies and our parks and recreation master plan," Maisner said. "And we do an evaluation of our facilities and populations and the northern part of our community has been in deficit with athletic fields for use."

"I'm actually the most excited about Towner," Wilson said. "A.) Because its right in my back yard B.) Because its baseball fields and i've coached baseball for a number of years."

If the millage is passed, the Park Commission is ready to move forward as quickly as possible with these plans.
