Bike MS: More than "Just a Ride"

Bike MS: More than

WILLIAMSTON - It's a personal accomplishment, a camaraderie, knowing that you're changing lives one mile at a time.

Bike MS Breakaway Ride is more than just an event that's rolling into Mid Michigan.

Just one month ago David Winfield heard about the ride and decided it was something he would like to do.

"It makes the ride even more fulfilling for you, it's not just exercise anymore, now it's something with a purpose. It's something that is really rewarding for everyone I hope; but certainly for me," David Winfield, a rider from Columbus, Ohio said.

Riding for a friends' niece and coworkers, David joined the hundreds of other riders gearing up to help move closer to a cure for Multiple Sclerosis.

The two-day event in July took cyclists, some riding with MS, through 60. 75 and 100 mile routes of terrain making a strong support system a necessity.

"The support though, is really amazing and I think that's what makes this so easy for riders who may not have had a ton of experience. So every ten to fifteen miles we've got a rest stop that's fully supported. Volunteers run those for us and it gives riders a chance to take a break and get off their bike," Tammy Wilson, VP of Special Events for the MI Chapter of MS Society said.

Volunteers lined the course supporting the riders with fluids and bike repairs if needed.

Raising a minimum of $250, teams of four rode through Williamston to spend the night at the Kellogg Center at MSU.

Riders left East Lansing Sunday morning to complete the journey keeping in mind it's not the miles that matter, it's the unforgettable journey. And thanks to dozens of supporters throughout the ride, each mile was that much sweeter.
