Local Kids Compete at Hershey Track
and Field Meet

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - When you think of Hershey you probably think of the chocolate. However, this past weekend it meant something a little healthier.

On June 13, Hershey sponsored a track and field meet for kids between the ages of 9 and 14.

The meet included the 50, 100, 200, 400 and 1600 meter runs along with two field events, the softball throw and the standing long jump.

According to Meridian Parks and Recreation staff member Greg Grothous the winners of each event get the opportunity to move on.

"The winners from today's meet will go to the state meet which will be held at Holt High School on June 28. Kids from all across the state will be there, it's a long day but it's a lot of fun for the kids," he said.

Grouthous also said that this may be the last year for the event due to Hershey pulling its national sponsorship. Hershey had been a sponsor of the track meet for over 35 years.
