MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Several Meridian Township residents continue to pick up and pay up after utility companies chop down their trees.

Currently, utility companies are allowed to remove trees that interfere with power lines on township property, but are not obligated to remove the stump.

The Township Board is looking to pass a new ordinance that would enforce utility companies to properly remove trees and other vegetation from resident's home.

If passed, the Township Board hopes to save residents money and protect the general welfare of the community.

The average cost of a single stump removal can range from $50 to $300 depending on the height, width, and estimated time to remove prominent roots.

"We definitely want to maintain the aesthetics of our community and we definitely want utility companies to clean up after themselves. I don't think that's too much to ask," said Township Board Trustee Milton L. Scales.

On June 11th, board members will meet with utility companies to further discuss the proposed Removal of Trees and Vegetation by Utility Companies Ordinance.

The board hopes to finalize their decision within the next two months.
