Proposed House Bills Would Amend the
Open Meetings Act

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Two Michigan house bills currently under review would make changes to the Open Meetings Act if approved by the House Oversight Committee.

House Bill 5193 would make changes to what can be said in closed meetings between public officials and their attorneys if litigation is pending. However, the bill would also not allow the two to meet in a closed meeting to talk about any anticipated and or suspected litigation.

The second bill 5194, both of which are sponsored by Representative Tom McMillin (R) of Rochester Hills, would allow public officials to re-vote on issues to correct past considerations in violation of the OMA.

The bill clarifies that any re-votes would not be a defense in a criminal or civil action.
