MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Haslett Community Food Bank helps locals stock up on food for the upcoming holiday season.

And according to the US census conducted in 2010, 13% or 5,000 people in Meridian Township live below the poverty level.

"They have to be under 200% of the poverty level. Which for a single person household, its about $24,000," said Darla Jackson. Human Services Specialist for Meridian Township. "Generally 95% of the people who sign up are either families, with children, adults with disabilities, or seniors."

The community can apply for assistance though the Ingham County Food Bank, which serves 19 banks in the Greater Lansing area.

Canned goods like chicken noodle soup is the most commonly donated item at the local pantry, but they accept anything from boxed foods, to fresh fruits.

According to volunteer, Mary Melton, the Haslett Community Food Bank serves around 100 families per month, and are able do to so because of the donations from the community.

"[I] Just can't stress enough how much this exists because of the community involvement," said Melton. "The whole community is giving, and were giving it back out to the community."

This program was started back in the 80's, and kept growing because of the need of the community. All donations are accepted directly at the Haslett Community Church.
