Michigan Kindergarten Age Requirement to Increase

Michigan Kindergarten Age
Requirement to Increase

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The minimum age for a child to enter kindergarten is increasing due to a new state law. Currently, a student has to be five years old by December 1 to enroll in kindergarten. Next year, a student wil have to be five by November 1 to be eligible. The age requirement will increase another month in each of the following two years. Some local parents approve of the change, while others would consider lowering the age requirement.

"Well based off of the fact that they're going right from preschool right into kindergarten now where it's full time and five days a week, lowering the age might not be bad thing..." said Haslett mother Brandy Jones.

If a child will be five by December but not by November, waivers are available to bypass the law. The waiver must be submitted by June 1.
