Senior Marathon Runner Walks With A
Purpose

UPDATE: EAST LANSING - The MSU Tower Guard hosted the 5k Shamrock Run on March 17, 2013, in effort to raise money for the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (RCPD).One of the many participants in the race was Owosso resident, Pam Starkweather.

Pam has been walking for 15 years and this year served as her ninth year waling the Shamrock.

"I took second place in my age division today," Starkweather said. "It's really quite an honor because walkers don't normally qualify for a metal, but it's good."

Getting ready for a marathon requires dedication, hard work, and extra training. Pam takes pride in maintaining her health and prepares for her races properly.

" My training entails walking, every, almost ever single day," Starkweather said. 'If I can get outside I do the treadmill and five days a week I do the Curves program."

Pam began her walking training after experiencing a tragic loss of a closer family member.

"My mother, when she was alive, lost both of her legs to vascular disease," Starkweather said. "It's very important to keep moving so that you keep that blood moving into your legs, so you don't lose them like my mom did."

Pam pays homage to her mother in every race she participates in. At age 60, she continues to pursue her passion for walking and encourages others to get involved.

"Baby steps, start with baby steps and work up to things," Starkweather said. "You to can do half marathons."
