Township Settles Tax Appeal with Meijer

Township Settles Tax Appeal with
Meijer

UPDATE: MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The township recently settled a tax appeal with the Meijer store on Grand River here in Okemos.

The settlement means Meijer will receive more than $320,000 in property tax refunds from appeals filed for 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Part of the refund will be paid for by the Downtown Development Authority. The Okemos School District will also be on the hook to repay money from property taxes paid by the store.

Township Manager Gerald Richards said this appeal isn't an isolated case.

"These types of appeals are happening annually, Meijer isn't the only one," Richards said.

"And so it's part of what the township has to take into consideration as we look at our revenues and expenditures. So this is not something that is totally out of the ordinary."

Meijer Inc. did not return our calls for comment.
