Tax Aide Program

UPDATE: MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - AARP recruits volunteers who are trained on new tax laws yearly to assists seniors in preparing their tax returns.

"AARP has a contract with the Internal Revenue Service to provide volunteer support to senior citizens who need help with their taxes," said William Brown, tax aide volunteer and member of AARP.

The volunteers are unable to prepare taxes with complicated investment portfolios, inheritances, property rentals, divorce, or tax issues regarding child custody. They help approximately eighteen seniors a day with their taxes and roughly 120 seniors each tax season.

"I really enjoy doing this, I look forward to it every year," William said. "This is my forth year doing it and I intend to keep doing it as long as I can."

Seniors who need help with their taxes will need to schedule an appointment at the Meridian Senior Center and bring with them the following documentation: a copy of previous years' tax returns, w-2 forms, income tax information, property tax statements, medical insurance costs, heating costs for home heating credits, and social security benefit information.

"It's very simple for them and free," William said.
