UPDATE: MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The personal property tax elimination is a tax cut for certain types of local businesses. Business will receive lower taxes leaving communities with less revenues. This leaves Michigan residents with the question of who will make up for lose revenues and fund local political and fire station that are ran off of these taxes?


Township Treasurer Julie Brixie says this will affect larger cities like Detroit, Michigan in a big way but for Meridian Township the impact will be on a smaller scale.

"We expect that this will have a $56,000 a year impact on Meridian Township's revenue of Personal Property Tax. Although its a small amount in comparison to our general found there is an additional layer of administration and paperwork that is being required by the township. This process will require funding as well," said Treasurer Brixie.

According to Treasurer Brixie the way the legislation is being proposed there will not be any revenue replacement for Meridian Township or other communities within the state of Michigan.

Brixie also said that there may be an opportunity for Michigan residents to vote on how revenues will be replaced but this would cause for a alteration of the constitution.
