UPDATE: LANSING - Volunteers in Michigan were recognized by Governor Snyder for their community service efforts.

Paula Kaiser VanDam, executive director of the the Michigan Community Service Commission says the need for volunteers in Michigan is tremendous.

"It could be helping maintain a park in their neighborhood, it could helping elderly individuals who need help remaining independent in their homes, it could be working at the local animal shelter and helping care for animals who don't have homes," VanDam said.

There were 40 finalists in the state in five different categories and eight recipients of the award.
