Okemos Road Streetlight Project

Okemos Road Streetlight Project

UPDATE: OKEMOS, MI - An Okemos homeowner, Colleen Maxwell says the community is very active outdoors.

"The sidewalks right now are very utilized. I don't know about the evenings and maybe because it's dark people are not accessing them in the evening hours. I know at 8:30 and 9:00 when we walk it's still light out, but we usually try to end before it gets dark," said Maxwell.

Colleen and other Meridian Township residents are happy to hear about the Okemos Road streetlight project.

Currently there are a few high level cobra lights lighting up the road and those will stay. The project will be adding 85 low level LED lights starting at Clinton Street and going to Jolly Road.

The new LED streetlights on Okemos Road are going to be uniform with the ones in downtown Okemos.

"I think it will be a great add to the downtown feel if they extend it from there to Jolly Road," said Maxwell.

The Director of Public Works and Engineering Ray Severy says one of the reasons for the delay is that they have been waiting on Consumer's Energy for the lower energy LED lights. So now that they are in, they can move forward.

"We have contacted MDOT for a grant for this project. We don't have a final approval in writing yet, but I am hoping to get that anytime now," said Severy.

Severy hopes to see the streetlights installed by October 1.
