Okemos Girls Lacrosse Advances to
Division 2 State Final

UPDATE: OKEMOS, MI - For the past three years the Okemos girls lacrosse team has been known as one of the top teams in girls Division 2 lacrosse. The Chiefs beat Livonia Ladywood 13-6 in the semifinal game on June 6, to advance to the Division 2 state finals for the third time in four years.

With less than five minutes into the game Ladywood's Kylie Birney scored the first goal of the night and Okemos' Olivia Sherman responded back by scoring the first and second goals for the Chiefs.

Ladywood tried to stay in the game, but Okemos slowly and diligently began to pull away in the second half. Sophomore Alex King scored her fourth goal in the second half to put the Chiefs ahead 9-4 with 18 minutes remaining.

"When you look at it on paper we don't have the greatest super-heroes of the game of lacrosse," Okemos coach Bill Prahler said. "All these girls are contributing and things that are left out is half of this team consists of ninth and tenth graders, half of them."

The Chiefs scored 7 total goals in the second half to Ladywood's 4 goals. Sherman had a total of six goals for the Chiefs, while sophomore Amanda Davio added a total of three goals for the 13-6 semifinal victory over Ladywood.

"It's a great experience for this old-timer, I love it ya know," said Prahler. "It's kind of an addictive thing, you get there once and you want to get there again and again, you need to be there and you need to work a team hard to get there."

Okemos will face East Grand Grand Rapids in the state championship game 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Rockford High School.
