UPDATE: MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - After more than a year of debate, the Township Board unanimously voted that the Central Fire Station is Okemos is not worth renovating and should be torn down.

The decision means the township will now begin the process of deciding where to build a new station and how to pay for it.

Township officials have ruled out the current site of the Central Fire Station as a location to build the new one due to the congestion in the area and the limited size of the lot.

And cost still remains a question as well.

Part of the information we'll be taking to the board for this coming Tuesday's meeting is a base cost for a size that would be a basic station, and then some additional costs for, if you want to say, add-ons," said Township Manager Gerald Richards.
