Fire Prevention Open House Continues in Meridian

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Meridian Township Fire Department held a Fire Prevention Open House at the Central Fire Station in Okemos on Sunday, October 9.

The event was open to the community and the purpose was to kick off Fire Prevention Week. The previous open house was back in 2019 and went on a 2 year hiatus due to the pandemic. Refreshments were available inside the station with cider and donuts, along with fire safety supplies and how to properly do a home safety inspection. People in attendance were also given the chance to tour a fire engine and EMS vehicle. There was also the opportunity for a hands-on demonstration spraying the firehose, as well as putting out a fire using fire extinguishers.

“It’s nice that we were able to get everyone back out now that the pandemic is winding down and do this community event again. It’s a good thing to get kids to come in here and teach them about fire safety and really get the adults in here and show us off. This is a great event to show the community what we have and what we can provide,” said Tavis Millerov, the Meridian Township Fire Marshal.

Millerov says teaching fire safety isn’t just for the kids, it’s also teaching the parents as well and added, “We may have the theme for we talk about fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, anything related to safety in the home and we want to make this educational to as many as we can. We offer free evaluations, call our office and we will be happy to come take a look at what you have and give a recommendation of what you have and provide materials of what you should have along the way.”
