MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - On June 7, Meridian Township Land Stewardship Coordinator Emma Campbell and Environmental Coordinator Leroy Harvey helped plant and weed various species of plants in the Hidden River Rain Garden.

The Hidden Rain Garden Project was started when a group of residents, businesses and community organizations came together to support the beautification and ecological restoration of the neighborhood.

According to Harvey, “They drew up some designs for the landscape and it sort of sat around for a while and then they decided the roundabout at Park Lake Drive/Burcham Drive would be a good spot.”

This rain garden is an important part of the community and has many natural benefits. Campbell emphasizes the importance of the native species that inhabit the garden, “They help with flood mitigation. Their roots can be between a foot and twenty foot long, so they help with soil quality.”

With the help of volunteers from around the community, this rain garden continues to be a wonderful landscape for everybody that passes it.
