LANSING, MICH. - From little kids to high schoolers to the elderly, Lansing Sailing Club Commodore Susanna Tellschow said there's a place for everyone in the sport of sailing.

"This is the world of Midwest small boat sailing," Tellschow said. "It's all about having a good time on the water and learning how to do it better and it's about family, food and it's a great entree into the world of sailing."

The club was founded in 1963 and it offers classes, races and other events for its members. In order to use the facility, one has to sign up for one of their memberships.

- Associate Membership: $225 a year, which allows individual or family to attend meetings and all activities, attend classes and use the club boat.
- Full/Regular Membership: $475-$500, which allows individual or family to bring their own sailboat to launch from club property and store at the facility. They also can attend meetings, vote and attend all activities.

Other types of memberships can be found on the club's website.

The club also offers community outreach events where members of the community can come without having a membership. One event was Lansing's Be A Tourist In Your Own Town, however it was canceled due to the coronavirus.

Tony Harkins, a recent graduate of Haslett High School, learned to sail a the Lansing Sailing Club through their youth sailing program and has been around ever since.

"This club is important for the community because it brings everybody together," Harkins said. "lt's just a place for everybody just to hang out, do a cook out, just hang out with the family by the lake. It's just a big family club."
