Whitmer Announces Michigan's COVID-19 Mandates Will Lift Sooner Than Expected

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP, MI - Today, Michigan takes another step towards life before the pandemic. Increased vaccinations have allowed Michigan to lower the amount of COVID-19 cases in the state. Governor Whitmer announced that starting June 22, indoor and outdoor settings will increase to 100% capacity, and masks will not be required.

As of today, nearly 5 million Michigan residents have been vaccinated for COVID-19. The Michigan Care Improvement Registry shows that half of Michigan residents have completed their vaccine and 60% have received their first dose.

“Thanks to the millions of Michiganders who rolled up their sleeves to get the safe, effective COVID-19 vaccine, we have been able to make these changes ahead of schedule,” said Whitmer.

Case rates, hospitalizations, and percent positivity have dropped in the last week. According to the data collected, the positivity rate has been 1.2% and Michigan is experiencing 24.3 cases per million.

“We have said all along that the vaccine would help us return to a sense of normalcy and today we announce that day is here,” said Elizabeth Hertel, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Director.

Some orders will still be active in order to protect vulnerable communities such as corrections, long-term care and agriculture. Further instruction on how to keep students and teacher safe in school will provided to the public soon.

Although mandates will be lifted, MDHHS will continue to provide recommendations to keep Michiganders in vulnerable communities and crowded areas safe.
