Update: Meridian Township Fire Department Modifies Burn Ban

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Meridian Township Fire Department originally issued a burn ban that went into effect on Saturday June 5, at 12:00 pm for all residential burning until further notice. But due to the recent rain, the burn ban issued has been modified. Recreational Fire Pits with a permit are now allowed. The current ban is only for Rural Residential Burning until further notice.

Residents are advised to use extreme caution with any activities that could potentially lead to a wildfire such as outdoor grilling, smoking materials and motorized or powered lawn equipment near dry vegetation.

"The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has Meridian Township in the highest fire risk category of 'Extreme' for at least the next 2-3 days,” says Meridian Township Fire Inspector, Tavis Millerov.  “Low moisture drought conditions coupled with low humidity levels near 30% and forecasted increasing winds are all contributing to our increased fire risk,"
