"House dust mites are probably the most common airborne allergen that people react to," said Lawrence Hennessey, M.D., of the Okemos Allergy Center.

No one is safe from indoor allergens, but you can fight irritating dust and dust mites with proper cleaning and tools.

Dr. Hennessey suggests staying away from feather dusters, because they only re-suspend the dust in the air. Instead, use something like a microfiber cloth, which attracts and holds onto the dust.

“And then removing carpeting if possible because that's the habitat that dust mites thrive in and if you deprive them of that, then the population will go down,” said Dr. Hennessey.

He also suggests regularly changing your whole-house air-filter and using an in-room HEPA filter to further eliminate allergens.
