MDHHS Sets Guidelines for Trick-or-Treating During the COVID-19 Pandemic

MICHIGAN - Just like the rest of 2020, Halloween will look a little bit different this year with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has issued recommendations this week on how to trick-or-treat safely.

Parents, trick-or-treaters and homeowners should stay home, not go out and not hand out candy if they are sick.

Homeowners handing out candy should wear a face mask that covers both the nose and the mouth at all times, whether they are inside or outside.

To ensure trick-or-treaters are social distancing, the MDHHS recommends using duct tape or another form of marker to make 6-foot lines from the front of the house to where the candy is being handed out.

A clean distribution table should be put in between the homeowner and the trick-or-treaters to put distance between them and to eliminate direct contact while handing out goodies.

Parents and trick-or-treaters should go out with the people they live with and have been around, and not with other groups.

A costume mask does not offer the same protections as a cloth safety mask, and therefore both should be worn unless it creates breathing problems. Halloween themed cloth masks are available in many stores such as Amazon or Meijer and are a fun way to celebrate the holiday while being safe.

Candy should be inspected and hand washing should happen at the end of the night, as well as before eating.

Parents are advised to take the time to sit down with their children and discuss these changes to ensure a safe and happy Halloween.
