Township Board Discusses Okemos Land Investment Rezoning
MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - At the January 7th Township Board Meeting, the Board discussed a request for rezoning approximately 96 acres on Bennett Road, Hagadorn Road, and Hulett Road.
Some of the conditions associated with the rezoning included: a 20’ asphalt pathway and resolving drainage issues in residential neighborhoods.
During the meeting, Township Clerk Brett Dreyfus, favored these conditions. However, he opposed the process for the development of a 20,000 square foot office building adjacent to these roads.
He also explained that the applicant did not give an explanation for specifically opposing this office building.
“It is not a good move to make exceptions like this, when it’s unnecessary to do so. The applicant could have gotten everything they wanted, and we could have done better land use planning.”
Treasurer Deschaine also supported Clerk Dreyfus’ opinion of the 20,000 square foot office building, but appreciated how this project will be a benefit for the community.
“Overall, this is a very great deal and it will benefit the effective communities” said Deschaine. The concerns of the residents were taken into account, the need of the developer to make this work in a way that’s enviromentally sound with property drainage was all taken into account.”
After careful consideration about the benefits and the consequences, Township Supervisor Ronald J. Styka decided that the Board should vote on this issue.
The Board voted 5 to 1 to approve this rezoning request.
