EAST LANSING - The MSU Museum continued their journey in bringing awareness to the campus through the second session of the speaker series they’re hosting.

Finding Our Voice: Sister Survivors Speak. A powerhouse panel was put together as the topic they tackled was consent.

This particular session was geared toward defining content and clearly expressing, through the current emotional climate of sexual assault victims, that no meaning no is not enough anymore.

The moderator for the evening was Tom Fritz Jr., a student of the MSU College of Education. Each member was introduced and gave insight into their own personal experiences of sexual assault.

This session, unlike the first, included call in panelists due to inclement weather. However, the ideas and the personal anecdotes opened up the discussion more. One of the major points discussed was language.

Language plays a huge role in terms of conveying the thoughts, feelings, and desires one may have in relation to consent. Consent, as defined by Louise Harder of the Army of Survivors, is a choice molded out of a want. But she stated that when that choice is taken, then the power owned in a person’s consent is taken.

It was also stated when fear is in the room, consent is not. The discussion continued to dive into areas, such as the parental role in this sensitive topic. Making it clear that, it is not their fault, and that they too are going through a healing process.

There was also a unique video that explained how easy it is to understand Consent. The next speaker series session will take place Wednesday February 20th in Detroit MI at the MSU Detroit Center at 6 pm.
