“A Chance to Dance” Helps Bring Art of Dance to People with Disabilities

OKEMOS - Dancing might not be fun for everyone, but it's important that everyone gets the chance to give it a try.

A Chance to Dance is a dancing class at Okemos High School. However, it's not just a regular dance class. This class is dedicated to teaching and practicing dance for people with disabilities.

Dora Ivkovich, a junior at the high school, is the founder as well as an instructor in the class. She says that she had the idea about a year and a half ago and is pleased with the way things are going so far.

"There are plenty of people with disabilities here who might be interested," she said. "And if I can make their lives even a little bit better then why wouldn't I?"

Ivkovich may have founded the group, but her work doesn't stop there. She is herself a competitive dancer and also one of the instructors for the class.

There are two separate groups that are dancing during the class. One is dancing while standing with a partner and the other is one for wheelchair dances.

This past Saturday was the second time this spring that the group has had class together, and the next one is on March 23.
